Where to get married abroad

Destination weddings: Where to get married abroad

Are you thinking of where to get married abroad? Have you thought of potential destinations? Have you always had a dream destination that you have always wanted to get married in, let us help you to decide where to get married abroad.  For that extra bit of romance after your destination wedding why not honeymoon somewhere exotic.
As you may understand it is easier to get married in some destinations than in others and this is an important factor to consider when deciding where to get married abroad.
The easiest destinations when considering where to get married abroad
Barefoot Traveller along with Barefoot Weddings is pleased to advise you on some of the easiest destinations
when considering where to get married.
Suggested destinations where the residency criteria is between 1 and 7 days are Mauritius, Seychelles, Sri Lanka, Bali, Thailand and the Caribbean. Many of the other destinations that may cross your mind would have stricter requirements in many cases.
There are many countries that allow a wedding ceremony but not a legally recognised marriage. Be sure to do your research to find out if the destinations you are considering when deciding on where to get married abroad would recognise your nuptials as legal.
At present the Maldives does not allow legally binding marriages for foreigners but there is talk of change. If your wedding cannot wait till then, why not consider getting legally married in Sri Lanka and then opting for a luxurious honeymoon in the Maldives making them a perfect twin centre option.
Or alternatively consider getting married in a local registry office and afterwards heading to your chosen destination for a charming wedding ceremony.
When thinking of where to get married abroad, you would have to consider many things. These include your guest count, budget and the number of days that you have for the wedding.
Long haul weddings?
If you are considering tying the knot somewhere exotic and at least 6 hours away by plane, you would have to consider whether you can invite all your intended guests as you would have to consider the distance and the budgets of your guests.
When considering where to get married abroad long haul, you will also have to consider the accommodation
options for your guests. We would recommend offering a range of different accommodation options for your guests to choose from when considering where to get married abroad.
If you are considering the Caribbean when thinking of where to get married abroad there are many resorts which offer inclusive packages complete with a wedding thrown in complimentary. The Caribbean is perfect for charming beach weddings when considering where to get married abroad.
When considering where to get married abroad and if you are thinking of a wedding which includes plenty of guests why not consider twin centre weddings and honeymoons so that you could tie the knot in one destination and escape on a honeymoon to another. Ideal destinations for this arrangement include a twin centre to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, South Africa and Mauritius or Seychelles and even Thailand and Bali.
Deciding on a wedding venue when considering where to get married abroad involves choosing either an indoor venue within a hotel or an outside venue. Depending on the ambience and experience that you would like to project during your nuptials you may wish to tie the knot in a stately ballroom or a beach as the sun sets over you or even a sprawling garden terrace overlooking a dense jungle below.
At Barefoot Traveller and Barefoot Weddings our in house wedding and honeymoon co-ordinators are able to assist you with planning the perfect wedding and honeymoon. They will handle all the arrangements on behalf of you by liaising with the suppliers to provide you with a hassle free experience. Necessities such as the flowers, spa treatments, hair and makeup and even the exact location for the wedding will be handled by our trained experts.
Once you have decided where to get married abroad it is important to get all the necessary legal paperwork in order.  Barefoot Traveller and Barefoot Weddings will assist you on this when deciding where to get married abroad. As standard we would a minimum of the following
  • Birth certificate
  • Passports – copies are only required of the information pages. Pages containing immigration and visa stamps are not required.
  • An affidavit confirming the your marital status (Married / Single / Divorced / Widowed)
When deciding where to get married abroad, we would also urge you to consider your attire for the day, if you are considering a beach wedding, light fabrics would be the way to go. For an added bit of romance, if your ceremony is just for you and your better half make sure you book a post wedding experience such as a sunset cruise or a romantic dinner in a deserted island under the stars to truly make your wedding an extra special event.
So after all the festivities upon your return back to the United Kingdom you would not need to register your marriage at the local register office, simply use your foreign marriage certificate to change your name if required.  We would recommend obtaining several copies of your marriage certificate before you leave the destination in which you decided to get married abroad.
The above are just a few of the things that you need to consider when thinking of where to get married abroad.
